( Wrestling Shoes ) As of now we have wrestling shoes available in sizes (1) and (2). Please email us if you are interested. (first come first serve) If your child has shoes from last season that no longer fit, please consider donating them to the program.

Wednesday October 28, 2009
( Birth Certificate ) If you still need to turn in a copy of your child's birth certificate, please bring it to Nov. 2. practice.

( Hydration ~H2O~ ) There is a misconception that drinking water only during practices is enough to keep your child hydrated. Please insure that your child is consuming around (3) 16 oz. bottles of water every day during wrestling season.

Thursday October 29, 2009
( Inner Nog'n ) I've been waiting on Nov. 2 for what seems to be an eternity of long, sleepless nights. Okay ... maybe I'm being a little mischievous, but I'm really fired up for the upcoming season. The program has 17 returning wrestlers and 15 new comers. I've been racking my brain for the last two months to establish a more effective workout program and I have also implemented drills that will improve foot/hand/eye cordination. Hopefully this will help our team to develop into more well rounded wrestlers. Practices this year will be more intense regarding discipline and hard work. Keep in mind ... I enjoy seeing the kids having a good time, but when their attention is required, I expect focused eyes and a zipped lip. Not only do I want them successful on the mat, but I want each child to be a class act. Yes mothers, you have coaches that will be teaching proper manners. For those of you who haven't had the chance to meet me, please have the understanding that I'm very approachable and have your child's best interest at heart. Feel free to email, call or see me after practices if you have questions or concerns. With that said ... it's almost time to hit the mat hard! See ya at practice.

Thursday October 29, 2009
( MUSCLES NEEDED ) With the season almost underway ... we are needing at least 6 men to help move the wrestling mats from Spring Valley High School to Buffalo Middle School. This will take place Saturday, October 31 at 5:00 p.m. If your available at this time, please call (304) 360-1039

Saturday October 31, 2009
( Special Thanks ) Thank you to the guys who helped move the wrestling mats today.

Monday November 2, 2009
( Inner Nog'n ) 1st practice? No way to describe it other than controlled chaos ... unless you consider a train wreck a form of art. On a more positive note, it went just as expected. I anticipate practices to go much smoother in 4 to 5 weeks once the kids become familar with the moves. I believe that discipline and consistency are the keys to developing an organized practice during this time. Though we just started, I can see potential in each child. As parents, you need to give your child words of encouragement to help build his/her self esteem. Once tournaments begin, win or lose, continue to show your support and let the coaching staff correct their mistakes made on the mat. I've seen numerous times in other programs kids who walk off the mat and have their parent(s) belittle their performance as the child grows weaker in confidience. I discourage this behavior because it destroys what we are trying to build on the mat. Please keep in mind that this sport is not only physically demanding but mentally as well. In saying ... I hope to get the chance to know each of you and work together in developing your child into a good wrestler. ** Practice Grade B- **

Tuesday November 3, 2009
( Vonunteers Needed ) We need several men to volunteer with rolling out the mats before practices. (Monday practice 5:15 p.m.) (Tuesday/Thursday practice 5:30 p.m.) We are also looking for a few "mat maids". For those of you who are new to wrestling, this job requires mopping the mats with bleach water once per week. We will do this on Monday's at 5:15 p.m. The mats will need aprox. 30 min. to dry prior to the beginning of practice. If any of you moms, grandma's or other ladies are interested, please let one of the coaches know during practice.

Tuesday November 3, 2009
( Inner Nog'n ) 2nd practice? Things are heading in the right direction and I couldn't be more pleased. Tonight I wanted to test their conditioning to see mental toughness. Though we are a long way from being in what our sport calls "wrestling shape", I witnessed determination to work hard and the desire to succeed. I believe these are the very characteristics that makes things a little easier in our daily life, likewise on the wrestling mat. It's a honor to introduce them to this sport and a privilege to watch them grow in success. We will finish up the first week of practice with the same routine and then pick up the pace. As I said before, words of encouragement and a pat on the back go a long way ... give them an "at a boy" because they will need it next week. ** Practice Grade B+ **

Thursday November 5, 2009
( Parents Information ) You will receive several items of information during November 9th (Monday) practice. We will have the practice schedule, tournament information and a coach/parent meeting to get things squared away for the season.

Thursday November 5, 2009
( Inner Nog'n ) 3rd practice? Is that Iowa or Buffalo Youth Wrestling? Point made ... though it's extremely early, we are coming together nicely as a team. The kids are responding very well to instruction and are extremely eager to learn. I can't help to chuckle inside when I see the progress made with just a few practices under our belt. I felt the need to begin disciplinary action against those not staying focused. I want to gain full respect from them while showing them respect in return. In the early stages of a coach/athlete relationship, I believe the tone can be set and I and the other coaches can make changes in their behavior that will prevent major misbehavior later. My intention is for them to have a mindset which produces " desire, discipline and determination". We will continue working toward the mental edge needed in this sport as well as the physical aspects in reaching the potential of a well rounded wrestler. These boys will be growing into young men before our eyes and deserve every posititve influence possible. I'm very proud of each and every one of them and all their hard work. ** Practice Grade A- **

Monday November 9, 2009
( PRACTICE ) Buffalo's Elementary and Middle Schools let out early today due to water promblems. I was informed it should be on around 5 p.m. Regardless ... we are still having practice at 6 p.m. Just in case the workers are behind schedule, please bring drinking water for your child.

Monday November 9, 2009
( 1st Tournament ) Our first tournament is coming up Nov. 22 in Mineral Wells W.V. This will be a novice event and good experience for our wrestlers. There is a team discount available ($15 each) if we have (10) or more wrestlers participating. Please turn in your money and registration form by no later than Monday, Nov. 16. Please pay us in cash (no checks) and we will mail in one team check from the program.

Monday November 9, 2009
( Inner Nog'n ) 4th Practice? I'm expecting more but need to remember this is only the second week. The kids are learning the moves quickly but our drilling speed is lacking. A repetitious pattern will take hold soon enough so as a coach, I need to get the ants out of my pants. We will be implementing some new drills and moves this coming week. We need to go through our entire arsenal before heading into our first open tournament (Ripley Rumble Nov. 28). I have three weeks to prepare them and I'm looking forward to the challange. ** Practice Grade B **

Monday November 10, 2009
( Inner Nog'n ) 5th Practice? I wanted to try something different tonight with the arrangment of the mats. I think it paid off and complimented the kids by showing how much they have learned in a short period of time. Much better !! Excellent !! Each child tonight earned and deserves my respect by showing good work ethic. After evaluating my earlier thoughts leading into this practice, I discovered the way I had things structured was the problem. Now that things are squared away ... it's time to get them ready. ** Practice Grade A **

Friday November 13, 2009
( PARENT MEETING ) There will be a Coach/Parent meeting during the Nov. 16 practice.

Friday November 13, 2009
( Inner Nog'n ) 6th Practice? If you enjoy watching horse races, you have noticed that while the horses are being escorted into the starting gate, some of them are jumping, bumping, some are even dumping. Once in and the gates fly open, the jockeys settle in, relax and gain full control over the horse. You might ask what does this have to do with our practice. The previous practices leading up to this one pale in comparison to last night. Though we have made nice strides with each one, I believe that our behavior, composure and mental focus has been lacking in previous practices, just like a horse before the race. However, this practice appeared comfortable, as if the gates flew open and we finally got settled in and relaxed. Last night this group of kids pulled together as a team. My intention now is for them to have the understanding that wrestlers take care of one another. This does not mean using what they have learned to fight on the school playground. I'm talking about experiences we all go through as adults. Things are not always fair in life and we must deal with them sooner or later. As I said before, having the mental ability to move forward in difficult times is an advantage and having the support of others around you makes it all the more possible. Point made ... I want to teach them that taking care of one another builds strength and character. When one is hurting, the team should carry them until he/she can walk on their own. I feel that if children as well as adults take the time to build each other up, encourage each other when we are down, show respect, self control and empathy, our daily walk will be so much easier. The sport of wrestling has a long history of trying to develop these characteristics in the hearts and minds of the young people who are involved. I truly care for this group of kids and I want to teach them what was once taught to me. I hope that these same values are being implemented at home too. I've always thought that as a parent I need to tell my kids that I love them at least as many times as I am correcting/disciplining them. Same scenario with coaching ... I have to find an even balance between discipline and praise toward my wrestlers. In saying ... we are making wonderful progress and I feel blessed to watch these kids mature. ** Practice Grade A **

Monday November 16, 2009
( Vienna Tournament ) We are taking 23 wrestlers to the Vienna Tournament. Good luck guys!

Tuesday November 17, 2009
( Inner Nog'n ) This up coming practice (Thursday) we will turn the mats over and expose the competition side. The kids will wrestle live with regulation rules. In doing so it will give the parents and kids who are new to the sport a better look at organized wrestling. This will better prepare them for our up coming tournament. The coaching staff has expressed to me how impressed they are with the kids so far. We have a wonderful group of young men. ** Overall Grade B ** ( I have to leave room for improvement )

Wednesday November 18, 2009

( TURKEY WEEK ) I fully understand that Holidays are busy times and we should spend it with those we love. Being that our program is something your kids love, I'm sure as parents it will not make your top 10 list for things to do this week. With that said ... practices will be held Monday, Nov. 23 & Tuesday, Nov. 24 from 6:00 p.m. ~ 8:00 p.m. "THURSDAY OFF" There will be practice on Friday, Nov. 27 for those who are entering Saturdays Nov. 28 tournament in Ripley. I will inform you later this week on a time. Keep in mind this is an "OPEN" tournament. Getting mat time the day before will benefit us greatly.

Saturday November 21, 2009
( Inner Nog'n ) With having one day until we hit the mat in Mineral Wells, I can't contain the excitement I have in seeing these young men perform. I was uncertain of the progress made until I witnessed them wrestling live during Thursday's practice. The kids have listened well and are working hard. They deserve our complete respect. I feel comfortable going into this (novice) tournament and think we should do really well. (Friendly reminder) As parents I want you to encourage your child (win or lose) and help build their self esteem. For most of them this sport will be the toughest thing they have done in their lives. See each of you Sunday ... It's time to roll !!!

Tuesday November 24, 2009
( ATTENTION PARENTS ) If you are interested in going to a tournament, it's important that you turn your entry form into me and I will send them all in at one time. This lets me know who is going and which size singlets are needed.

Thursday November 26, 2009
( Happy Thanksgiving ) I just wanted to let each of you know that I'm thankful for having what I consider a healthy program heading into it's second season. There are many factors that have contributed to our sucess, but most of the credit goes to the supportive parents and the hard work of each child. Have a wonderful day with those you love and I will see each of you soon. I expect to see everyone back on Monday's practice. We need to regroup, focus on what we have learned to this point and push forward.

Saturday November 28, 2009
( Inner Nog'n ) I just got home from the Ripley Tournament and decided to examine my thoughts. We made a tremendous showing against experienced wresters and I couldn't be more pleased. This week I want to turn up the pace and bring foward a more aggressive style of wrestling. On the mat we need to be on the attack and control our own destiny. The key in doing this will be repetitious drilling, self confidence and stamina. Through hard work and encouragement from the coaching staff and parents, I believe this goal can be met. I will always preach to you as parents, (win or lose) to give them positive feedback that will help build self esteem. Just like in our own daily lives, we will always face the ups and downs in the road. We must stay determined and focused on our goals while driving foward. My hope is that these principles will not only lead them to becoming well rounded wrestlers, but also provide them with the tools needed for accomplishing success in their adult lives. Discipline, determination and a desire to succeed are the main factors in this sport. While driving home I thought of the progress made by my second year wrestlers. They are exactly where I invisioned them being at this point and their wrestling future looks promising. With only 4 weeks of practice under their belt, the first year wrestlers are looking good too. Of course they have alot of work to do but they seem to be on the right path. Well ... it's time to lay down and get a good night's sleep. I want to see everyone back on Monday ready to work. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call or see me after practice.

Wednesday December 2, 2009
( Bill Johnson Memorial Tournament ) Five wrestlers entered Saturday's (Open) tournament and fourteen entered Sunday's (Novice) tournament. ( TODAY'S PRACTICE ) Due to a power outage, Buffalo Middle School was closed today. I will continue to check through out the morning hours to see if the problem is solved. If the electric is not on by 3 o'clock, practice will be cancelled. Please continue to check this page for the latest updates. For those needing a singlet for Sunday's Warren Tournament, please give me a call. Coach Lucas (304) 360-1039

Thursday December 10, 2009
( TODAY'S PRACTICE ) I just left a message for Mr. Wuagaman (Buffalo Middle School's Principal) @ 11:15 a.m. regarding the power outage. If I don't hear back from him by 2:00 p.m. practice will be cancelled. After thinking about the circumstances more in depth, the gym will not have enough time to heat back up. Which in turn will make the mats to hard to roll on. If practice is cancelled today we will hold a weekend practice on Saturday morning @ 10:00 a.m. During this time we will pass out singlets for this weekend's tournament. Check back after 2:00 p.m. to get the verdict.

Thursday December 10, 2009
( PRACTICE CANCELLED ) Mr. Wuagaman sent message that the electricity could be off until this weekend. If the power is restored before Saturday, we will have practice Saturday morning @ 10:00 a.m. I would like all parents to call me please. Thanks ... Coach Lucas (304) 360-1039

If there are a number of you that want mat time before these events, we can hold a practice on Saturday Dec. 26. We can discuss this option during our next scheduled practice. Coach Lucas

Friday December 18, 2009
( Shirt Order ) Due to the uncommunicated scheduling conflict of Thursday's practice, both shirt orders will be handed out Dec. 21 during Monday's practice. I'm very sorry for any inconvience that might have occured. My goal is to run this program as smooth as possible. I will contact those in charge and see about getting the gym schedule. For those who signed up and paid, I will return your money or hold it over for the next up coming tournament. You make that decission and let me know. Coach Lucas

Tuesday December 22, 2009
( 1st Annual Buffalo Stampede ) This is not anything set in stone, but as of now I want to have a quad tournament on Saturday morning, January 16. Everything must fall into place before this can happen. I'm working on it right now and hope everything goes through. If we are able to pull this off, I will be asking each parent to play a small part. Any time you have a big or small event such as this, you must have volunteers. I will let each of you know during practices how things are going. Keep your fingers crossed. Coach Lucas

( Home Tournament Update ) We are planning two quad tournaments for Jan. 16th and Jan. 30th. Both tournaments will take place at Buffalo's elementary gym. We have a lot of organizing to do in the next two weeks. As I stated before ... we must have volunteer help from all parents. I will talk to each of you during our up-coming practices to inform you of how you can help. The teams of interest for the Jan 16th quad are Milton, Huntington and Barboursville with Barboursville already committed. This coming Sunday I'm visiting a Mountain State League Tournament being held at Huntington High. I will personally invite Milton's and Huntington's coaches in hopes of clearing our first hurdle. I have a few other teams in mind in case either can't make it.

Tuesday January 5, 2010
( PRACTICE ) *7:30 a.m.* As of now ... tonights practice has been cancelled due to road conditions. If the snow stops and our tax dollars allow the roads to be cleared, we will have practice. If this is the case, I will post it at 4:00 p.m. The snow is to continue through out the week. Please check back Thursday morning for a decision on Thursday's practice.

UPDATE: *4:15 p.m.* Practice will take place this evening. The main roads and most back roads are clear. If you live where the roads still look bad, please use your best judgement. I don't expect anyone to risk injury over practice.

Wednesday January 6, 2010
( Home Tournament Update ) I made the trip to Huntington's youth tournament and spoke with several coaches in hopes of adding two more teams. The teams we will face in the Buffalo Stampede Quad Tournament will be Barboursville, Milton, and Hurricane. Huntington Ponies are interested in coming to our Jan. 30th quad tournament. I explained to the coaches that my main focus was to give each child "mat time". This tournament will be ran as a scrimage without trophies. We will only keep score on each bout (match). There will be no team points added nor teams receiving places. Depending on weight classes, each child should wrestle 2 - 5 times. I will create a volunteer list of things to do for each parent to choose a duty. I will update each of you during practices and on "The Scoop"

Thursday January 7, 2010
( PRACTICE ) *7:15 a.m.* As of now ... tonights practice will take place. The local news is calling for several inches of snow. We'll wait and see what's in store for this evening. I will post a "No or Go" at 4:00 p.m.

UPDATE: *4:00 p.m.* Practice is cancelled. I realize those going to Saturday's tournament would like mat time before hand. We will see what the roads look like tomorrow and try having practice Friday evening. I will contact the Mineral Wells director to see if the tournament has been cancelled. Please check back tomorrow around 4 p.m. for an update.

Thursday January 7, 2010
( Friendly Reminder ) Team and individual pictures will be taken Jan. 15th in the Buffalo Middle School Gym starting @ 6 p.m. The kids are asked to wear their wrestling shirts for the team photo.
